International Women’s Day celebrated every year on the 8th of March. It is a global day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The theme for 2017 celebration is “Be Bold For Change”.Given the degree of violence against women and girls in war-torn and terrorism affected regions, Purple Pearls Empowerment Foundation organised a discussion session with women and girls at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Karmajiji, Abuja in celebration of the 2017 International Women’s Day.
At the forum, issues surrounding the violence inflicted upon women and girls at the camp and how we all – individuals, NGOs and civil society groups and government can collectively take bold steps for change to ensure a better quality of life for the affected women and girls were discussed. The women shared their stories of the Boko Haram insurgency as well as domestic violence. The invited guests provided support for the women afterwards.
